The NRL31205 photoelectric sensor works in diffuse mode: emitter and receiver share one housing and detection occurs when the infrared beam is reflected back from the object. The 350 mm range is specified for a white matt card 200 x 200 mm.
The square Q31 housing measuring 31 x 20 x 12 mm in PBT fits where there is no room for a cylindrical sensor. Sensitivity is set with a trimmer and two LEDs show the output state and the presence of supply voltage.
