Inductive sensors for aluminum and other non-magnetic materials - how do they work and when is it worth using them?

Inductive sensors for aluminum and other non-magnetic materials - how they work and when to use them?

A typical inductive sensor responds most strongly to steel, to a significantly lesser extent to aluminum, brass or copper. In practice, this means reduced range, false signals or the need to position the sensor extremely close to the component, which in many cases is a problem for UR.

In collaboration with the aluminum industry, we have developed inductive sensors that detect only non-magnetic materials in an all-metal stainless steel housing.

Non-ferrous sensor (NF) series is characterized by:

  • Detection of non-magnetic materials only
  • All-metal housing (stainless steel)
  • No reaction to contamination by filings, chips of detected material

Inductive sensors for aluminum - what you gain?

Specialized sensors for non-magnetic materials (often referred to as "Aluminum only sensors", "Non-ferrous sensors", "NF sensors") detect only aluminum.

What you gain?

  • they ignore steel and ferromagnetic elements, even if they are very close,
  • they probably detect aluminum, brass, copper,
  • maintain a stable detection distance,
  • do not require frequent adjustments,
  • minimize detection errors, flawlessly detect aluminum, bronze and brass,
  • full repeatability of the process

Sensor applications for aluminum and non-magnetic materials

1.Aluminium machining lines

Precise detection of workpieces after processing, during transport, sorting or feeding.

2.Automotive - suspension components, aluminum castings

3.Die casting and CNC machining

4.Packaging and assembly machines

Detection of cans, caps, profiles and lightweight aluminum parts.

5.Robotics

Positioning of non-magnetic parts in grippers and mounting slots.

What are the benefits of "aluminum-only" sensors?

  • ✓ Elimination of false/no detection
  • ✓ Increased process stability - the sensor sees only what it is supposed to see.
  • ✓ Fewer micro-stops - less patching, cleaning and manual verification.
  • ✓ Shorter changeover times - no need to "set the sensor to contact".
  • ✓ Ability to work in harsh applications - all-metal design of the sensor allows it to work in the harshest conditions

In many plants such sensors can replace even several standard solutions, because their operation is more stable and predictable.

Summary

Inductive sensors that detect non-magnetic materials, such as aluminum, are a key solution where standard sensors fail. They give stability, repeatability and eliminate errors due to the presence of steel in the environment.

It is an ideal technology for industries that work with aluminum - from automotive to profile production and castings.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Will inductive sensor for aluminum detect steel?

Not.Sensors of type Non-ferrous (NF) are designed to respond only to non-magnetic materials.Steel and other ferromagnetic materials are ignored by them, even if they are very close to the detection zone.

Why a standard inductive sensor goes bad on aluminum?

Standard inductive sensors are optimized for steel. With aluminum, their range decreases significantly and detection becomes unstable, which often leads to false signals and the need for continuous adjustment.

Where NF sensors perform best?

They are most commonly used in aluminum machining lines, automotive, die casting, packaging machines and robotic applications, where the presence of steel in the environment prevents stable detection with standard sensors.

Are aluminum sensors resistant to chips and filings?

Yes.The all-metal design and selective detection of non-magnetic materials make NF sensors unresponsive to chips and filings, which significantly increases their reliability in harsh production environments.

Where can I see available sensors for aluminum?

You can find a full range of inductive sensors for non-ferrous metals in the category:
Inductive sensors for non-ferrous metals (Non-ferrous)

Which sensor for aluminum to choose as an example?

A sensor is an example:
M12 inductive sensor, all-metal, Sn = 4 mm, aluminum detection (NF)
It is a sensor designed for stable aluminum detection in demanding industrial applications.
